Asian stocks open higher on Monday

TOKYOTokyo shares rose 1.05 per cent on Monday morning after positive US manufacturing data presented investors with an optimistic snapshot of the world’s largest economy, brokers said.

The headline Nikkei-225 index at the Tokyo Stock Exchange soared 103.52 points to 9,971.59. The Topix index of all first-section issues added 1.12 per cent, or 9.55 points, to 863.41.

SHANGHAIChinese shares ended higher at midday on Monday with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 1.76 percent, or 48.56 points, to close at 2,807.93.

The Shenzhen Component Index rose 2.22 per cent, or 269.91 points, to finish at 12,448.

HONG KONGHong Kong surged 1.78 per cent on Monday morning, in line with regional gains, following another strong rally in New York at the end of last week.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index added 398.05 points to 22,796.15 on turnover of HK$41.56 billion (S$6.54 billion).

KUALA LUMPURAt 12.30pm today, there were 290 gainers, 325 losers and 294 counters traded unchanged on the Bursa Malaysia.

The FBM-KLCI was at 1,587.91 up 4.97 points, the FBMACE was at 4,163.72 down 2.58 points, and the FBMEmas was at 10,890.94 up 24.83 points.

Turnover was at 365.845 million shares valued at RM582.73 million (S$237.81 million). — AFP, BERNAMA
