— Google Inc., which has an office in Chicago, faces a possible federal antitrust investigation, according to a news report.

The California-based search engine giant could receive a civil subpoena soon from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, according to a Wall Street Journal report that cited people familiar with the matter.

The investigation would focus on how Google’s search advertising function operates and whether any favoritism exists.

Google employs about 400 fulltime workers in Chicago.

Representatives for Google and the FTC declined to comment to the Wall Street Journal.

The news follows reports that the European Commission is investigating accusations that Google violated European competition laws.
