Mesirow Financial Holdings Inc. CEO James Tyree
(Crain’s) — Mesirow Financial Holdings Inc. Chairman and CEO Jim Tyree has been diagnosed with stomach cancer, he said in an interview.
Mr. Tyree, 52, said he found out about the cancer diagnosis Thursday, and will decide on a course of treatment by the end of this week. Mr. Tyree has had health challenges in the past, including a kidney and pancreas transplant in 2006 to rid him of the diabetes and a heart defibrillator implant.
“I’ve had these battles many times,” said Mr. Tyree, who is also chairman of Sun-Times Media Holdings LLC.
“I’m in fighting shape right now, ready to go” he added, remarking on when he expects to start treatment.
If he needs to take time off for the treatment, he’s not concerned about Mesirow or Sun-Times performing in good stead without him, because they both have management teams that can keep the companies on course, he said.
Mesirow is “well-equipped for these situations,” he said. The Chicago-based company includes asset management, broker-dealer and investment banking operations.
He said the same was true for Sun-Times, which is on plan to meet financial objectives that he and a group of investors set for the Chicago-based media company when they bought the newspaper assets out of bankruptcy in 2009.
“We’re on plan,” he said of the Sun-Times, which confirmed Tuesday that it was making additional job cuts across the company, including at least 14 in the editorial staffs of its newspapers.
