A s internet services move to phones and phone services move online, the telecommunications industry has become a bit of a jumbled mess. Now The New York Times reports Comcast looks to add another layer to the field through a new deal with Skype to offer the popular service through regular TV.

Comcast already offers phone services, but the new deal represents its first attempt at video calls. The company has even suggested that customers could use the service while still watching TV. The new service should come to some areas in a trial later this year and the rest of the country some time next year, though neither company has indicated anything about the price. A few TVs already come with cameras included, but most newer models also feature USB ports that could accommodate a third party camera.

“By combining Comcast’s broad living room reach with Skype’s innovative communications platform and worldwide community of users, we can bring video calling into the heart of the home, allowing people to share life’s experiences both big and small,” Skype chief executive Tony Bates said in a statement.

Skype benefits from this deal in so much as Comcast represents the largest cable network in the U.S., but ZDNet also notes the deal has the potential to open Skype up to more small business teleconferencing.
