Target Your Market Before Marketing

It’s a big marketing mistake to assume that everyone is interested in our products or services.

As Marilyn Guille says in How to Find and Sell to Your Target Market,

“The most successful small businesses understand that only a limited number of people will buy their product or service. The task then becomes determining, as closely as possible, exactly who those people are, and ‘targeting’ the business’s marketing efforts and dollars toward them.”

These people are our target market.

So my first question to anyone asking about what marketing strategies or advertising techniques would work for their business is “What’s your ideal client or customer like?” That person represents your target market.

Only after you’ve identified your target market can you Create an Effective Sales and Marketing Strategy and put together an effective Marketing Plan.
