Free workshop on commercial grants and tax credits scheduled for Jan. 26 in Roanoke

The city of Roanoke will hold a free commercial grants and tax credits workshop Jan. 26

Topics will include enterprise zone program grants, tax abatements, facade improvement grants, brownfield grants, historic rehabilitation tax credits, job creation grants and entrepreneurship grants.

Time will be available at the end of the workshop for participants to meet with city representatives and ask additional questions.

The workshop will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Roanoke Higher Education Center.

National Retail Federation boosts its holiday sales forecast

With the final Christmas countdown begun, the nation’s largest retail trade group has upgraded its holiday sales forecast reflecting growing optimism that much more spending is to come.

The National Retail Federation said Thursday it now expects holiday sales for the November and December period to rise 3.8 percent to a record $469.1 billion. That’s up from its more modest 2.8 percent forecast made in early October when the economy’s health looked more uncertain.

The new forecast is hardly stellar.

Cuts possible at American Eagle as American Airlines reorganizes, analysts say

Some industry analysts have made the case that cuts may come soon to American Eagle — the airline that flies to and from Abilene — as parent company AMR Corp. reorganizes under bankruptcy proceedings.

On Wednesday, American Eagle confirmed that it suspended training for 20 Eagle pilots, according to several published reports.

A day earlier, Bloomberg News reported comments from industry analyst Jeff Kauffman, of Stern Agee & Leach inc., in which he said “what’s broken is the Eagle product.” In particular, Kauffman and other analysts said small planes — of the size that fly into and out of Abilene — pose an economic drain on the company.

AMR Corp. also is parent company of American Airlines, which relies on Eagle for flights from small cities such as Abilene and San Angelo to larger airports.
